When ebikes are getting popular, It could be a little difficult if you are not exactly sure of what the difference between each class is or what you are looking for. Luckily for you here at BTN we are striving to become your ebike experts to help you make the best decision when choosing the type of e-bike that would best fit you. E-bikes are classified into class 1, 2 and 3 according to their level of motor assistance. Let's learn about the differences between all three classes of e-bikes.

Class 1 Electric Bike

It's pedal-assist, and the motor stops helping at a maximum speed of 20 MPH (Miles Per Hour). Although without throttle, when the rider is pedaling, the motor will provide the power to assist, until reach the speed of 20 MPH.

It is the most affordable and most universally accepted class of bikes from a regulatory standpoint. You can ride on many bike paths and city streets.

Class 2 Electric Bike

It has a pedal-assist mode up to 20 mph plus a purely throttle-powered mode. What is a throttle? It’s a button on ebike, When you hold it down, the bike takes off without your pedaling. It means you do not need to pedal, just use the pure motor power to ride.  For safety and regulation reasons, our BTN ebikes are limited to a certain speed.

Class 3 Electric Bike

Class 3 ebike has pedal-assist (like class 1), and motor stops at 28MPH. Due to more faster and more powerful, they are not allowed to use on certain bike trails and bike paths. If you are  looking for more powerful ebikes, our BTN ebikes support unlock the speed limit.


In conclusion, before you buy your first ebike, pls learn more about policies and laws and regulations. And you also need to find the function and speed you need, for most people, I suggest you to buy class 2.
